Research work at the Department is connected to the main national research programme financed by the Office for Science at the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology. We should also mention the Department's participation in the programme of protective excavation work within the DARS motorway construction project. In the international sphere, the Department co-operates with the universities of Beijing, Berlin, Edinburgh, Leiden, Newcastle upon Tyne, Oxford, Pisa and Thessaloniki. It is also active in the European COST G2 network, and is participating in the sixth framework programme of the European Community for research technological development and demonstration (RTD) activities for the 2002-2006 period. For several years, the Department has been organising thematic symposia (Neolithic seminars) where the world elite dealing with the Neolithisation of Eurasia meets.
