Antique (Roman, Etruscan) cultures from the formation of protohistoric societies of the Apennine peninsula in connection to cultures of the Mediterranean, through the city of Rome, Roman Republic, and Roman Empire as the ecumene of the time and the origin of Byzantine medieval society on one side and west-European societies on the other. Geography of the Roman world. Prehistoric bases of Roman culture and art, Greek, Phoenician, Etruscan, and medioitalic culture and art, and the double influence of Hellenism on the culture and art of the Roman Republic. Roman urbanism, architecture and building techniques – towns, necropolises, engineering architecture. Historical topography (Rome). Roman portrait, the art of propaganda and sarcophagi – development and ideological starting points, iconography. Roman bases of Early Christian art, the art of Byzantium and of Carolingian Europe.
