The course introduces various aspects of the concept of the Neolithic, focusing primarily on the domestication of plants and animals and the genesis of a specific assemblage of plants, animals, institutions, material culture, and social and ritual practices that define the Neolithic. It explains the chronological and geographical context of domestication, the paleoenvironmental background of the process, the active role of hunter-gatherer communities in this transformation, the concept of domestication, and the processes involved in domesticating plants and animals. Furthermore, it examines different aspects of this process through changes in material culture, settlement patterns, demographic shifts, and the invention of new institutions, social structures, and ritual practices. The subject also explores the spread of the Neolithic package from its core region in Southwest Asia, particularly into Europe, highlighting specific cultural and regional transformations that were part of this expansion. Lastly, it explains the process of intensification of Neolithic production and the cultural and historical consequences of this development.
