History of Southeast Europe in the 19th Century

Presentation of the basic historical processes in the history of SE Europe in the discussed period. Students are acquainted with events in economy, politics, and culture, as well as changes in social structures. Special emphasis is on one of the topic sets:
- development of modern nations and the process of emergence of national states alongside the simultaneous weakening of dominant forces (Ottoman empire, Austria-Hungary) and the influence of European forces on the events; development is discussed within the framework of the modernist paradigm and critical evaluation of primordialism;
- enforcement of simplified and modernised literary languages and the process of unification of culture in comparison with regional and local languages and speeches, as well as cultures;
- modernization of social structures alongside the weakening of traditional forms of social organization;
- beginnings of industrialization and development of modern traffic (railway and road network, steam shipping).
Along with the presentation and analysis of events and processes students are familiarized with relevant literature.
